EXCITING,
EARTHSHATTERING EDUCATION!
You
won’t want to miss an IMPI event this year! Our
board and education committee have taken the approach that
we are all about high caliber monthly programming. We believe
this is the ticket to providing our members a maximum return
on investment. In addition to outstanding learning opportunities, we believe
exciting and relevant speakers talking to us about pertinent
industry issues is the catalyst for strong attendance at
monthly meetings. When more members come to monthly meetings,
there is a snowball effect of positives: More attendees means
greater networking opportunities. More attendees means more
funds going into the chapter for future high level speakers.
And so on and so on.
So…what
is an exciting, relevant speaker? How about Lt. Governor
Kathy Davis in August? Or Stevan Porter, President
of the Americas, Intercontinental Hotels Group in October?
Or Bruce Harris, President of Conferon Global Services in
January? Wow!!
The above
individuals are so accomplished that they can speak about
anything
and we’d be impressed, but they
do have specific and pertinent subjects to cover. And it’s
not like we don’t have great speakers during the other
months. We have responded to your speaker subject requests
on the Needs Assessment Questionnaire sent out this winter,
and have some terrific topics and speakers scheduled.
We hope
to see you at our next event. You won’t be
disappointed!
JUST
CONFIRMED AT PRESS TIME: Our guest speaker in February
is Bill “the original apprentice” Rancic, from
Donald Trump’s TV show “The Apprentice!!!”
It will be a joint meeting with the local American Marketing
Association Chapter. More to come later! Wow!!

Hardesty
Sales Manager for the Holiday Inn Select Airport
Paula
Hardesty is enjoying her role as Sales Manager for the
Holiday Inn
Select Airport. Paula previously worked in a variety
of capacities for 2 mega Travel & Meetings Management
Companies. Prior to that she was a corporate planner for
Golden Rule Insurance,
as well as, a Corporate Travel Manager for Inland Paperboard
and Packaging. When asked what
she enjoys most about her profession, Paula implied “All
the wonderful people I have met over the years. So many
I am still in contact with. Each day is a
new adventure.”
One her most humorous moments in her professional life was
the time she was a travel agent and a client came in to book
a trip to Hawaii. The client inquired about the airfare between
the islands and then asked how much it would cost to rent
a car and drive!
Paula’s
hobbies include calligraphy, reading, cooking and fencing.
(That last one is a first for me.)
She has been married for 17 years to her husband Michael
and has 2 West Highland White Terriers named Samantha and
Binky. Her family also includes 6 nieces and 2 nephews and
a whopping 32 first cousins! (Somebody was busy in that family.)
Paula’s final note was her favorite quote: “Honesty
is the first chapter in the book of wisdom” - Thomas
Jefferson.

Lisa Thomas
Roche Diagnostics Lisa Thomas graduated from Purdue University with a major
in Restaurant, Hotel and Tourism management. She is currently
a convention planner for the Centralized and Molecular Divisions
of Roche Diagnostics, which is a manufacturer and supplier
of diagnostic instruments and reagents.
Before coming to Roche, Lisa worked in hotel sales for the
Embassy Suites Downtown and the Indianapolis Marriott. She
was also a meeting planner for Meeting Services Unlimited
and worked as an independent planner.
Her favorite part of convention planning is the variety
of work and variety of people she meets on a day-to-day basis.
She enjoys working onsite, and trying to make upset people
happy. (She must be good at it, because one of her attendees
sent her flowers!)
Lisa also likes seeing the finished product after working
hard on a project, and the travel. Her favorite destination
is Seattle/Whidby Island.
Lisa
has two kids—Jack (7½) and Emma (4½).
In her spare time, Lisa enjoys travel, reading, any sports
that her kids are into. She has also volunteered with the
Indiana Sports Corp. and Castleton United Methodist Church.
She helped with the 2001 World Police and Fire Games, which
was her first time working with such a large international
group.
Lisa’s
favorite quote is “What lies behind us
and what lies before us is nothing compared to what lies
within us.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Member Profile |
Amanda Cecil, CMP
Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis
My
eight years in the hospitality, meetings, and sports
tourism field have been both exciting and rewarding!
The opportunities afforded to me have taken me to New
Hampshire,
Ohio, Kentucky, Florida, and finally back to Indiana. I
have worked both on the supplier and planner side of the
industry, learning the meeting and convention industry
through both educational and practical experience.
Upon my graduation from Indiana University, I ventured
into several internships in the sports marketing field,
landing me at the RCA Tennis Championships in Indy and
then to Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. I decided
to pursue a master’s degree at Ohio State University
and relocated back to the Midwest. While in Columbus,
I became involved in a research project for the Columbus
Convention and Visitors Bureau and upon my graduation
accepted
a position as the convention services and sports sales
assistant. I guess I can say that is where my interest
in conventions, meetings, events, hospitality and tourism
really began.
My next position was a planner role for Host Communications,
Inc. in Lexington, Kentucky. I worked in the association
management division of the company as a tradeshow manager
and meeting planner. The experience kept me on the road
and constantly learning new aspects of association planning
and programming. My final position as a planner was with
Event Management Solutions based in Atlanta where I served
as the Director of Business Development.
In 2002, I returned to Indianapolis to begin a new career
path in education. I currently teach Mechanics of Meeting
Planning, Sports Tourism, Exhibit Marketing and Cruise
line Management (and yes we go on a cruise) for IUPUI’s
Tourism, Conventions and Event Management (TCEM) department.
Throughout my numerous jobs and geographical moves,
MPI has always remained a priority for me. Whether simply
volunteering
for a committee or serving on the Board, I have found
my involvement both professionally and personally rewarding.
As part of my academic service, I enjoy participating
in
MPI’s numerous programs and initiatives. I hope
to bring my enthusiasm for this association by providing
quality
education to our membership in my role as VP of Education.
I look forward to working with a great educational committee
and supporting our awesome educational directors and
chairs.
On a personal note, I enjoy the career flexibility as
it allows me to spend more quality time at home with my
husband, Rhett, and our year-old son, Cooper. In my spare
time, I am a Big Sister for Big Brothers/Big Sisters and
have recently joined the Indianapolis Junior League. I
will continue to pursue my doctoral degree and hope to
finish in 2005-2006! Did I really say spare time?
Anyway, look forward to meeting you at our next education
meeting. It promises to be worth your time!!

“Someday I’ll
go back to school…
Submitted by Carol A. Paddock
…if I ever have the money!” If you have ever
uttered these words, and have not followed through on your
dream, then maybe it is time to take another look at making
this dream a reality. The Women’s Leadership Initiative
created the WLI Scholarship Fund just for people like you!
The WLI Scholarship Fund provides scholarships not only
for traditional education, but also for non-traditional arenas
such as executive certification programs or similar leadership
training.
Currently, there are six scholarship funds available in
three categories: College Education Funding, General Leadership
Education or Academic Funding and MPI Programs. A new scholarship
fund, the WLI Leadership Scholarship Fund will be added this
fall. As result of the new LPGA Golf Clinic fundraiser held
at the World Education Conference in July, this fund was
established specifically to help individuals who cannot normally
attend MPI programs or events due to financial constraints.
Scholarships are offered year-round, with applications reviewed
quarterly and have the following deadlines: July 31, October
31, January 31 and April 30. Applications must be received
at least three months in advance of the program or course
you wish to attend.
Not for Women Only
Even though these scholarships are offered through the Women’s
Leadership Initiative, they are not only for women. Men are
encouraged to apply. Scholarships are available to men at
a ratio equal to the current annual percentage of each gender
who are members of MPI. Currently this number is 75% women,
25% men - therefore 25% of the funding could go to qualified
men.
Start
the process to make your dream of furthering your education
a reality.
Visit the MPI
Women’s Leadership
Initiative site for details and applications!

Indianapolis Arts Garden Director/Arts Council of Indianapolis
The Education
Committee is excited to kick-off the new education year
in style! I-MPI is thrilled to host Lieutenant Governor

and impressive.
IMPI is honored to have Lieutenant Governor Davis share
her insight on the economic impact of our industry in the
state of Indiana.

industry influences it.

It was a warm and sunny day at the Ironwood Golf Club, not
a cloud in the sky, perfect for a day of golf. With jokes

before!
Congratulations

Betsy Dukes from the Omni Severin Hotel,
Marilyn Seright with Delta Faucet Company and Steve
Kuatzman with
